Access to clean water and proper sanitation continues to improve in the Dominican Republic following strong national commitment to the realization of the millennium development goals. The  World Health Organization and UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation documented substantial progress in the region; 86% of the population has access to improved drinking water sources with 83% of residents using improved sanitation facilities.  Non governmental organizations (NGOs) have also taken an active role in the country to improve upon existing infrastructure, particularly in rural regions of the Dominican Republic.
